Shares of CSX (CSX) were slipping Thursday afternoon, after an analyst downgrade citing lack of catalysts for the railroad giant.
BarclaysBrandon Oglenski and Keith Mori cut their rating on the stock from Overweight to Equal Weight and lowered their target price by $2 to $30. They write that while CSX is still the cheapest in the sector, they see marginal upside for the stock given a limited growth outlook in 2015. They also note that a difficult start to 2014 implies further headwinds, as CSX cost and margin performance has lagged peers in recent periods, and fficiency gains could be masked in the near-term as the network regains fluidity./p>
Their downgrade also relates to dynamics in the coal industry:
CSX shareholders have sustained a volatile ride in the past two years, dominated by the loss of nearly $800mm in coal revenue. Dynamics have improved in the near term for domestic coal consumption, but pending environmental regulations and soft export markets make for a difficult long-term outlook. Based on our analysis of future headwinds, we estimate coal revenues could decline a further $380 to $500mm in the coming years. We are encouraged at CSX pace of expansion beyond coal markets, which has totaled nearly $1bn in additional revenue or 12% of growth in two years. However, growth has been insufficient to create favorable earnings outcomes given coal relatively high profitability. Beyond the near term, coal headwinds signal another slow growth year in 2015, driving our downgrade to Equal Weight.

If you're looking for income investments, then it's awfully hard to argue with the massive distribution payments from LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE ) (NASDAQ: LNCO ) , Breitburn Energy Partners (NASDAQ: BBEP ) , and Vanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR ) . Thing is, though, income investments need both a decent yield and a level of certainty that it will keep that distribution going for many years to come. Other than being high-yielding investments, they are also all master limited partnerships, which means you need to look beyond just the operations to see how these companies will stand the test of time.

Restoration Hardware (RH) reported fourth-quarter earnings of 83 cents a share on revenue of $471.7 million. The company beat analyst expectations and also reported increasing sales growth. Forward looking statements were also positive as the firm looks to expand and transform its retail stores in 2014, according to Chairman and Chief Executive Gary Friedman.

Restoration Hardware Holdings Inc. (NYSE: RH) has been a momentum trader’s dream and makes the Jefferies list. The company returned from private equity purgatory and had its IPO late in 2012, hitting the market at $24 and quickly rising to the mid-$30s. Then suddenly last June things took off. That coincided with a fantastic first-quarter earnings release, posting a 41% increase in comparable sales over the previous year. Recently the stock got caught up in the retail related sell-off and may offer investors an excellent entry point. The Jefferies price target is a whopping $88, and the consensus is at $76.33. The stock closed Thursday at just $58.64.

Another potential earnings short-squeeze trade is home furnishings retailer Restoration Hardware (RH), which is set to release its numbers Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Restoration Hardware to report revenue of $377.60 million on earnings of 43 cents per share.
Just recently, Janney Capital initiated shares of Restoration Hardware with a buy rating and a price target of $82 per share.
The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Restoration Hardware is pretty high at 10.6%. That means that out of the 34.27 million shares in the tradable float, 2.55 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 11.7%, or by about 267,000 shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a strong quarter, then shares of RH could experience a big short-squeeze post-earnings.
From a technical perspective, RH is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $63.81 to its intraday high of $78.29 a share. During that move, shares of RH have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of RH into news 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action.
If you're in the bull camp on RH, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to take out its all-time high of $78.29 a share (or its intraday high Tuesday if greater) with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 656,881 shares. If that breakout triggers, then RH will set up to enter new all-time high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $85 to $90 a sh

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Bob Ciura]
In the investing world, boring businesses don't get much attention. The financial media obsesses over the next hot stock, preferring to ignore the seemingly sleepy companies that generate reliable profits year after year. Some of the high-quality companies that fly under the radar are pure industrials, such as Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR ) , Dover (NYSE: DOV ) , and Illinois Tool Works (NYSE: ITW ) .

Honeywell is a much more broadly diversified company than many investors give it credit for, with its automation and control systems business earning the most revenue of its four main divisions. As part of a coalition with companies including Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR ) , Praxair, and General Dynamics, Honeywell will participate on a $10 million contract from the Department of Energy to further clean-energy manufacturing. That contract is obviously small, but the prospects of clean-energy industry are much larger, and the project should help Honeywell gain valuable expertise in the area that it can put to more profitable use going forward.
