Fed Study: Poor Falling Farther Behind Rest of U.S.

Top New Companies To Buy Right Now

Fed Study: Poor Falling Farther Behind Rest of U.S. Tish Wells/MCT via Getty Images The rise in the number of Americans out of work for long periods of time has helped push U.S. income inequality to a 50-year high and has particularly hurt low-income households, according to a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Fed Chair Janet Yellen has called the growing income gap between rich and poor "one of most disturbing trends facing the nation." She has also said she is especially concerned with the "devastating" effects of long-term unemployment. The share of unemployed U.S. workers unable to find jobs after looking for six months or longer more than doubled to 45.3 percent as a result of the Great Recession. A government report Friday showed a decline in the ranks of the long-term unemployed since that peak, but in April they still accounted for more than one-third of all unemployed. Households in the bottom fifth are suffering the most from the situation, Minneapolis Fed monetary adviser Fabrizio Perri wrote in his analysis of income inequality posted on the bank's website Wednesday. "The increase in inequality at the bottom seems tightly linked to the very large increase in long-term unemployment, which has depressed income for the bottom," Perri said. Perri's study also showed that taxes and government programs such as unemployment insurance have narrowed some of the inequality gap but have benefited middle-income Americans more than the poor. Overall, disposable income for all income levels has fallen over the past 15 years, the study found. But while the gap between the top 5 percent of households and that of middle-income household rose sharply in terms of pre-tax income, the gap in post-tax income has been fairly stable, the study found. By contrast, the gap in disposable income between the bottom 20 percent and middle-income households widened after the recession, "and it is now as high as it has ever been over the past half century," Perri wrote. "This will be an important trend to monitor in coming years." Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota has been trying to convince his fellow policymakers, including Yellen, of the need to keep rates lower for longer to get the jobless back to work faster. Although on Wednesday he supported the Fed's decision to continue to dial down the central bank's massive bond-buying stimulus, Kocherlakota has said he still believes the central bank should do more to boost both employment and inflation. The Minneapolis Fed published Perri's analysis as the lead essay in its 2013 annual report, which also includes a letter form Kocherlakota calling it a "dispassionate analysis" that will contribute to public policymaking.

ToyotaĆ¢€™s Redesigned 2015 Camry Is No More Boring

Toyota (TM) Camry, the top-selling North American model in the midsize sedan segment, is going for a complete overhaul. The car was last given a facelift in 2011. The 2015 version of the car was revealed at the New York Auto Show. It showed how much the automaker has worked towards its designing --bringing about a remarkable praiseworthy upgrade.

The Japanese company, although the global lead automaker, has been criticized on several occasion of offering boring and conservative cars. The carmaker ultimately realized that it's high time to modify this image. It could hurt the company's sales volume in the long run as competition is intensifying.

Matching Up with Competitor's Styling

Although Camry's been the highest selling model in the U.S. in the past 12 year, competition is tightening as Ford (F), Nissan (NSANY), Honda (HMC), and Hyundai (HYMTF) are luring customers with their stylish offerings. Honda last redesigned its Accord in 2013, and this year it's Hyundai, which unveiled the all new 2015 Sonata. What's challenging for Toyota is that German luxury giant Mercedes-Benz has introduced cars within the $30,000 range that invades the territory of the Camry. Ford Fusion and Nissan Altima have earned positive response from buyer and critics as well. Credit goes to the car engineers who have paid great attention in designing the car, making it look stylish.

So we see that rivalry for higher market share is intensifying, and Toyota can't afford to stay behind to keep its global lead intact.

In 2013, Toyota sold as many as 408,000 Camrys in North America, reporting lion's share in this category. The next closest in sales in this segment was domestic rival Honda's Accord, which registered sales of 365,000 units during the year. The midsize car segment is a big attract to the carmakers as it sees robust demand. This is precisely why automakers are giving high importance in the designing of these cars as they know that this could bring them big bucks.

A Complete New Look

The Camry has been a reliable car for many American. It has the minimum curves with no extra frills and flares. In simple words it's a very simple looking solid model. But the 2015 Camry is defying all that to give a totally new, more comfortable, modish, and premium experience to its buyers.

The automaker has put in whole lot of effort in the cars styling, which was visible at the New York Auto Show. Toyota claims that it made the car go for a complete makeover, and that there's nothing in similarity with the previous model other than the roof. The auto giant has absorbed ideas from the changing tastes and preferences of customers that it's becoming increasingly important to make vehicles more and more visually attractive if you want to sell them.

Bill Fray, Toyota U.S. division chief said that the carmaker has tried to be more outgoing and daring with the Camry styling this time. The 2015 Camry would give a better balance between the car suspension and firmness, along with a comfortable steering. This would enhance the driving experience.

If Toyota can impress critics and car fanatics, there's going to be no stopping the auto major from earning massive money. Every Camry, that costs around $23,965, pours in $2,500 to $3,000 as profits in the pocket of the company. The redesigned Camry could boost volumes remarkably, help Toyota earn huge amount, and stay atop.

Last Thought

Toyota is working hard to go for a complete shift in image from being branded as the maker of boring cars to the one that offers fantastic cars in terms of both styling and substance. The company has also gone to the extent of shuffling its management in the recent past to provide better styled cars. The Asian auto giant looks poised to maintain its lead with the all new Camry.

The Opposite Of Spoiled: The Right Way To Teach Kids About Money

Top India Stocks To Buy For 2015

What's the best way to teach kids about money? That question has haunted folks for decades — maybe centuries. There are dozens of financial literacy programs in the United States right now, but none of them seems to be effective. Why is that?

I've written before about why I think financial literacy education fails. Here's the short version: Most financial literacy fails because it focuses too much on mechanics — how bonds work, the magic of compound interest — and not enough on behavior. While mechanics are key (they're the foundation, after all), they're not the most important aspect of financial success.

Here's an analogy: My brothers know how to read and write. They're smart guys, and they're both literate. But just because they know how to read and write doesn't mean they practice those skills. One of my brothers used to proudly declare, "I haven't read a book since high school." (Oh, how that hurt my book-loving heart!) Knowing how to read doesn't make you a reader. And knowing how to save doesn't make you a saver.

Financial literacy is not the answer. We've got to do something more if we want to teach our kids about money.

John Hancock
Recently, I've had two great conversations about this topic. The first was with John Hancock, the president of the Portland chapter of Junior Achievement, a non-profit group focused on helping kids learn about money and entrepreneurship. He and I met for coffee last week, and we chatted about his own efforts to improve financial literacy.

Tip: Teach children the importance of creating an emergency fund. You can even go so far as helping them open their own online savings account, or one with a local bank to get started.
Like me, Hancock thinks it's important to focus less on the "how to" and more on the "why" when it comes to money. He wants to change behavior. His goal isn't to just educate young people about money, but (as he puts it), "to change habits of the hands and habits of the heart".

Hancock thinks it's important to put people into active simulations, such as role-playing. To that end, his group puts on an annual event for kids called Biztown, which lets them experience a simulated city environment. The children take on the roles of various business and professional leaders in an interconnected community, and they learn how to manage their own personal finances. I know several kids who've done this program, and they love it. So do their parents. The experience seems to have a positive effect on their attitudes toward money.

The local chapter of Junior Achievement also produces The Money Jar, a weekly podcast about kids and money. (Last autumn, I appeared on an episode of this program to talk about how to build savings.)

I applaud Hancock's efforts, and hope to work with him in the future to improve financial education in our area.

Ron Lieber
Earlier this week, I had a long phone call with Ron Lieber, who writes the "Your Money" column for the New York Times. He's currently on sabbatical to write a book called The Opposite of Spoiled, in which he hopes to teach parents how to raise children with financial maturity. Note: This was the first time Lieber and I have ever connected, though we've been aware of each other for years. After all, I write the "Your Money" column for Entrepreneur magazine, and my first book was called Your Money: The Missing Manual.
Lieber has some great insights about financial education. "Financial literacy works best when it's delivered in the moment on an as-needed basis," he told me.

As an example, he talked about how sixteen- and seventeen-year-old kids make six-figure decisions about education with very little guidance. "The fact that these kids are making major financial decisions in complete ignorance is a crisis," Lieber said. "We need a financial Americorps to go into high schools and help kids address important questions. Why go to college? Why do different schools cost different amounts? How does financial aid work? What about delaying school for a year or two?"

Lieber agrees that financial literacy efforts have largely been ineffective. He says they should focus on "feelings, behavior, and emotion — all of the things we've realized over the past decade that are at the crux of getting money right." We talked about his book, and about raising children to be financially mature.

Note: Lieber is midway through writing The Opposite of Spoiled, and he's looking for more people to interview. If you have a great story about kids and money, he'd like to talk to you. Drop me a line, and I'll connect you.
"How do children become spoiled?" I asked.

"They're not born that way," he said. "We do it to them. Nobody wants to raise a spoiled child, yet it happens all the time."

One issue is what Lieber calls the "first-generation affluent". When you were raised poor (or lower middle-class), there's a real temptation to give your kids the things you never had. You remember what it was like to feel deprived, and you don't want your children to experience that — even if a little deprivation might be good for them, might build character. (After all, it helped make you who you are, right?) "Kids should, at the very least, have to earn things," Lieber says. In writing about spoiled children, Lieber tried to think of what it meant to be the opposite of spoiled. Because the word "spoiled" was originally used to describe food, the opposite is "fresh", which isn't a good choice in this case. "When we talk about spoiled children," Lieber told me, "the opposite qualities are modesty, patience, thrift, generosity, perspective, perseverance, courage, grit, bravery, prudence, and so on."

"That sounds like the boy scout law," I said. Lieber laughed. "Scouting imparts a core set of important values, it's true."

"The thing is," he continued, "you can use money as a central tool to teach kids about every single one of these. Instead of shying away from the topic, what if we put money at the center of family conversations? What if we assumed not that money subverts values but contributes to them? Because it does. This is the path to financial literacy and financial education."

Note: Lieber also loves the idea of opening a money store — some sort of business where folks can come in and get cheap, objective information about how to better manage their finances. He's done more research into the practicalities than I have. Neither one of us is actually ready to move forward with such a business, but we like the idea of it...

The Bottom Line As always happens with these discussion about financial literacy, I don't have any answers — only complaints. Over the past few months, I've chatted with Flexo from Consumerism Commentary. He want to start a financial literacy non-profit, and I want to help him make that a reality. But neither one of us really knows what that organization will look like and how it will accomplish its objectives.

I'm not sure we need to have the answers right now, though. Maybe it's enough to simply be asking the questions. I think that's the first step in finding a way to help children become masters of their financial futures.

Compared with men, "Women naturally think about their lives more holistically," she says. "Success for women tends to be broader."

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) has faced similar problems from its vantage in the coal sector, with a 22% decline since this time last year leading to an 18% overall drop during the S&P 500's bull market. Low natural-gas prices in recent years have hurt the prospects for coal, especially domestically as utilities shift their electricity generation from coal-fired to gas-fired power plants. Export opportunities to Asia have given Peabody an advantage over its peers, though, as it has resources in Australia to provide shorter transport than U.S. companies with solely domestic production. Asia's appetite for coal is likely to continue, and Peabody is a natural way to take advantage of it.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

Mining fueled more than $11 billion in GDP in 2011, with the manufacturing, real-estate, and transportation industries also contributing strongly to its economy. Coal mining has been a boon for the state: According to the Energy Information Administration, Wyoming boasted nine of the 10 top-producing coal mines in the U.S. last year, with two mines alone making up 20% of total American coal production. While low prices and waning public sentiment have hurt the coal industry, some firms have thrived in Wyoming. Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) , the biggest public coal-producer in the world, operates Wyoming's largest coal mine, the North Antelope Rochelle mine. That mine produced more than 105 million short tons of coal in 2010 alone for Peabody. The company also operates the 10-largest coal mine in America: its Rawhide mine, also in Wyoming, with 2010 production of more than 11 million short tons of coal.

Fannie Mae (NASDAQOTCBB: FNMA  ) has had an incredible run in 2013. Its stock is incredibly up almost 1000% on the year. But there is one critical thing investors may be missing about this stock.

Fannie Mae headquarters in Washington, D.C. Photo: Flickr/Future Atlas.

Its goals are not your goals
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the two government-sponsored entities, or GSEs, that are principally responsible for providing liquidity in the mortgage market by guaranteeing and buying mortgages from banks. Yet following the spectacular collapse of the housing market in 2008, Fannie Mae was placed into conservatorship by the Federal Housing Finance Agency, or FHFA, as it received a total of $116.1 billion in government bailout funds.

So what does that mean for investors? Well, the FHFA states plainly, "As conservator, the [FHFA] assumed all the powers of the shareholders, directors, and officers, with the goal of preserving and conserving the assets and property of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac."

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Don't get me wrong - it's fun to be right. There's such a thing as being too right (or at least too right, too fast) though, and when that happens, the smart thing to do is, well do something about it. Case in point? I was right yesterday about Neurometrix Inc. (NASDAQ:NURO). I suggested the stock was already in the midst of a breakout, and NURO was poised to soar. I didn't count on this morning's big jump and subsequent gap, however, so now that my risk of continuing to hold it is as big as my potential reward from here, I and anybody else who followed my lead has a tough decision to make... though I've already made mine.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

If you missed the recent surges from Neurometrix Inc. (NASDAQ:NURO) and/or OXiGENE Inc. (NASDAQ:OXGN), and decided to skip an entry on either or both because they were too frothy at the time, then here's some good news.... you're getting a second chance. Both NURO and OXGN are getting their proverbial second wind, and they're doing so at a price much lower than the price you would have had to pay for either just a few days ago. There's just one catch - you may want to hurry of you want in. This second wind is unfurling as rapidly as the first surges did.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

For the second time in as many days, I find myself supporting the purchase of a suddenly-bullish stock by saying "this time is different". Yesterday I was talking about OXiGENE Inc. (NASDAQ:OXGN), but today I'm using the term to describe the bullishness that's unfurling with Neurometrix Inc. (NASDAQ:NURO). And just for the record, yes, I know the perils of the "this time is different" argument. I tend to cringe when I hear it, as (too much) experience has taught me that things are rarely different - patterns within the market play themselves out over and over again. In the case of NURO as well as OXGN though, I can put my finger on something specific that we've not yet seen.

Over the past few weeks, Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:LXRX) and Decision Diagnostics Corp. (OTCBB:DECN) have dominated the diabetes diagnostics and diabetes treatment landscape. Shares of LXRX jumped 20% on Tuesday following news that one of the key drugs in its pipeline showed more than enough efficacy in its clinical trials. DECN shares are up more than 250% on the heels of an almost-assured victory in its patent lawsuit against industry giant Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ). Anyone looking for a new trade in the diabetes diagnostics space, however, may want to look past overbought Lexicon Pharmaceuticals and Decision Diagnostics at this point, and instead turn their attention to newly-budding Neurometrix Inc. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

ADDvantage Technologies Group (AEY) distributes and services a line of electronics and hardware products for the cable television industry. This stock closed up 5.2% to $2.42 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $2.29-$2.47

    52-Week Range: $2.25-$3.55

    Tuesday's Volume: 112,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 36,625

From a technical perspective, AEY ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $2.28 with above-average volume. This sharp spike to the upside on Tuesday also pushed shares of AEY back above its 50-day moving average of $2.41. Shares of AEY are now starting to trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if AEY manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.50 to $2.55 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in AEY as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $2.28 or above its 52-week low of $2.25 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 36,625 shares. If that breakout kicks off soon, then AEY will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $2.81 or at $3.10 to $3.13.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] s to be overcapitalized. I'd much rather own a business with real earnings rather than wait for something to happen with a pile of cash.

My question is this: How cheap is cheap enough? Clearly (to me), George Risk (RSKIA) is cheap at or even just above book value. It's a darn good business so I'm getting high quality assets and earnings power. That gets less clear when looking at lower quality businesses.

    For example:

BorgWarner (NYSE: BWA  ) makes fuel-efficiency tools for cars and is among the tips Sarbjit Nahal provided in his report. The company has outperformed every auto supplier in North America over the past three years. BorgWarner's stock has slipped recently, largely because of declines in European auto sales. That could make the timing just right to consider this solid company.

With the stock down more than 13% since early March, it would be easy to assume Multimedia Games Holding Company (MGAM) was headed for a nasty earnings report at the end of April. The market was wrong, however. MGAM posted a 25% increase in revenue for the quarter, and a 28% improvement in earnings … and that was before the acquisition of PokerTek (PTEK). Bringing PokertTek into the fold will almost assure a fourth straight year of revenue and income growth.

A more expansive menu that allowed breakfast to be served all day could mean bigger profits for McDonald's -- but let face it: That's really been Jack in the Box's (NASDAQ: JACK  ) territory since day one. While Jack in the Box has made no qualms about emulating McDonald's interior redesigns and menu expansion in order to boost its own sales, it's been the company's promotion of its all-day breakfasts that make it one of the fastest growing fast-food restaurants in the United States.

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg/Getty Images Don't let the recent weakness at McDonald's (MCD) lead you to the conclusion that all burger flippers are struggling. It's just not true, and Burger King (BKW) proved that in its latest quarter. McDonald's longtime nemesis posted better than expected profitability during the first three months of the year, fueled by marginally positive comparable-restaurant sales for the period. It may not seem like much of a victory. Burger King's worldwide comps rose 2 percent, with its U.S. and Canada locations clocking in with a meager 0.1 percent increase. However, even that baby step up is better than the 1.7 percent decline at McDonald's. Unlike Ronald McDonald, Burger King isn't clowning around. The Whopper Beats the Big Mac? This would be an opportune time for Burger King to break away from the larger chain that it's been copying for years. We've seen Burger King offer up items that are blatantly similar to McCafe smoothies, Chicken McBites, Big Macs, Egg McMuffins, and even the cult fave McRibs. However, now that McDonald's is in a rut -- having posted three consecutive quarters of negative comparable-restaurant sales in this country -- it appears Burger King is ready to carve its own path. "We started off 2014 strong by generating comparable sales growth across all four regions during the first quarter," Burger King Worldwide CEO Daniel Schwartz explained in the fast food giant's earnings release. "Despite severe winter weather in the U.S. and Canada, our commitment to launching fewer, more impactful products and simplifying in-restaurant operations helped drive improved performance." If there's one thing in that statement that should stand out as a sharp contrast to the current strategy at McDonald's it's that Burger King is rolling out "fewer" products as it is "simplifying" operations. That's an entirely different strategy than the one being used by McDonald's, which seems to involve rolling out a lot of new menu ite
