Top 5 Up And Coming Companies For 2014

The ETF industry continues to grow exponentially and evolve. Total assets in US listed ETFs are close to $1.5 trillion, while the number of products is more than 1,480 now. However, the industry continues to be top-heavy.

The largest ETF SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) now has more than $145 billion in AUM, while products in next three spots--Vanguard Emerging Markets ETF (VWO), iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), iShares MSCI EAFE ETF (EFA)--each have more than $40 billion in assets. Top 10 funds hold almost 30% of total industry assets.

Most investors continue to pour money into bigger, widely known ETFs, even though sponsors continue to struggle to come up with new, different types of products. Some of these icheproducts are forced to shutter their doors due to lack of investor interest.

Larger ETFs are usually more popular with investors as most of them follow the simpler market cap weight methodology, often have lower expense ratios and ample liquidity. (Read: Buy these ETFs for brighter insurance sector outlook)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

Sticking with the theme of earnings season, a better-than-expected earnings report from building and automotive efficiency company Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI  ) is what propelled it to the top of the day's gainers, up 8.3%. For the third quarter, Johnson Controls increased revenue by 2%, to $10.83 billion, a bit lower than the Street had expected, but produced $0.78 in adjusted EPS, $0.03 better than analysts expected. Furthermore, Johnson Controls narrowed its full-year EPS range to a range of $2.64-$2.66, from $2.60-$2.70, which is higher than the current $2.61 consensus. It was definitely a good day overall for Johnson Controls, but I'd keep a cautious eye on its U.S. business, as a government spending slowdown could adversely impact its future results.

    About that whale...
If that weren't enough, Markel also announced this morning it has officially completed its $3 billion acquisition of Alterra (NASDAQ: ALTE  ) , which, as I noted back in February, was a radical departure from Markel's typically smaller buyout targets. While it will undoubtedly take some time to fully integrate Alterra's operations, management expressed excitement for Alterra's ability to help Markel expand its global footprint in the insurance and reinsurance market.
